Fishing on Lake Havasu

When you only have a short window of time to get out and go fishing, you want to make sure you’re going to catch something. Which is why Lake Havasu should be high on your list of places to visit.

Thanks to a dedicated fisheries improvement program that was started back in 1992, Lake Havasu is one of the best destinations to catch fish in for anglers of all ages and abilities in the southwest. As one of the largest and most successful hatchery programs in the United States it is a shining example of what can be done when government agencies, private companies and avid anglers from the public sector work together to accomplish a common goal.

use a boat to catch big mouth bass while on holiday at lake havasuThis is not fish story, there are lots of fish to catch, and big ones to boot. Just last November the record for a smallmouth bass was caught in Lake Havasu at 5.63 pounds. That’s a good catch and a better meal.

Bass aren’t the only variety of fish you can expect to catch in Lake Havasu. There are also largemouth bass, striped bass, bluegill, black crappies, sunfish, channel catfish and flathead catfish.

Legalities
Please note, there are a few fish that are off limits until their numbers recover. The razorback sucker, flannelmouth sucker, and bonytail chub are all endangered and therefore off limits to keep. If you happen to catch any of these fish, please release them alive and, if possible, report the catch to a natural resource manager in the area.

Also be aware that since Lake Havasu is on the border of Arizona and California you you will need a Colorado River Special Use Stamp on your license if you are fishing from a boat and will be moving back and forth across the border. All Arizona fishing lakes, Lake Havasu included, require an Arizona fishing license (available at bait and tackle shops).

Fishing is but one of the many fun activities you can enjoy while visiting Lake Havasu. There are plenty of other things to do from golf, to water skiing, sailing, gambling, hiking or just hanging out on the beach.

Are you ready to come visit? Book your stay at Lake Havasu Vacation Home Rental.

boating under london bridge at lake havasuWhich is why Lake Havasu is such an excellent place to take a vacation to get away from it all and relax. Common Sense Boating Tips

  • Use Sunscreen and bring extra clothing.
  • Don’t Drink Alcohol and Drive.
  • Bring extra water!
  • Be sure to look around before turning your watercraft.
  • When pulling a skier or tube, always use a third person as an observer (it is the law)
  • When pulling a skier or person on a tube, do not get too close to the shore AND ALWAYS be sure to look before turning.
  • When “hanging out” in the channel, watch for signs of Carbon Monoxide poisoning: dizziness, nausea, vomiting, or altered mental status (that isn’t realated to alcohol consumption). CO poisoning can also happen to persons that have been riding in the rear of the boat.
  • Observe the no wake zone as you approach Bridgewater Channel, especially on crowded weekends.

Please be sure that you are familiar with the Arizona Boating rules and regulations before venturing out onto the lake. For more information download the Arizona Game and Fish Boaters Guide:

Fun Facts and Information about Lake Havasu

Lake Havasu is the result of Parker Dam holding back the Colorado River. It is located on the Arizona-California border south of Interstate 40.map of lake havasu for vacation rentersFrom Davis Dam (Lake Mohave), the Colorado river flows south about 57 miles to an area commonly known as “the sandbar”. From there Lake Havasu proper begins, covering about 21,000 surface acres and extending twenty nine miles south to Parker Dam.

The maximum depth in the lower one-third of the lake is about seventy five feet. The average lake depth is about thirty feet deep. The river section that is upstream from the sandbar offers an average depth of about twelve feet with scour holes that drop to about fifty feet and sand or rock bars just under the surface.

aerial view of lake havasuLake Havasu’s shoreline is quite irregular, ranging from mountainous bedrock to gravel and sand aggregates in the backs of coves. The gravel and sand comes from desert washes. Thank goodness, development is confined to state and city parks, marina and resort concessionaires and the Chemehuevi Indian reservation on the California side. The entire Arizona side from Parker Dam to Lake Havasu City is a Bureau of Land Management area with over one hundred campsites that are accessible by boat only. The vast majority of the water in the lake comes from the Colorado River.

coastline view of lake havasu

The coast of Lake Havasu can be quite rugged.

The only tributary, Bill Williams River, enters the lake near Parker Dam. Flow of the Bill Williams is dictated by runoff from the Prescott, AZ area and release from Alamo Dam. Water exits Lake Havasu through the hydroelectric tubes in the dam or through either the Metropolitan Canal in California or the Central Arizona Canal.

The lake’s water quality could be described as moderately fertile with colors ranging from greenish clear in the main lake to brownish in the backs of coves and river backwaters. Visibility ranges from four feet in some coves and Mouth of Bill Williams River to twenty four feet in the main lake. The water is alkaline with pH ranging from 7.6 to 8.6. Both calcium and manganese carbonates account for higher hardness levels. A thermocline develops during the latter half of summer at depths from twenty to thirty five feet, so if you really want to cool off, that’s the place to go :)

Lake Havasu Vacation Renters Enjoy the London Bridge and City History

This brief history of Lake Havasu City comes from Wikipedia:

Lake Havasu City’s initial community first started as an Army Air Corps rest camp during World War Two on the shores of Lake Havasu. The actual City was first set up in 1963 by Robert P. McCulloch (of McCulloch chainsaws) as an urban planned community. McCulloch purchased 3,500 acres of property on the east side of the lake along Pittsburg Point, the peninsula that eventually would be transformed into “the island”. The city was incorporated in 1978.

Interesting, and here’s the real story … much of the content deserves credit from Havasu magazine …

Lake Havasu City’s incredible start …

It’s pretty incredible that Robert P. McCulloch was able to transport and reassemble, piece by piece, the historic London Bridge, almost halfway across the globe, and rebuild it in the Arizona desert. What’s REALLY incredible is that he was able to build a city in that same dry space of desert, especially since there was no major road winding its way through the could-be city.

Local legend says that McCulloch first spied the eventual site of what would become Lake Havasu City when he flew over the area in search of a place to test the outboard boat motors he manufactured.  Had he flown over that site less than thirty years prior, there would have been no Lake Havasu to host the McCulloch test center.

History prior to Parker Dam

When Parker Dam was built, what we now know as Lake Havasu was created in the 1930’s.  Until the construction of the dam system, the Lake was just a remote segment of the Colorado River winding its way through the rough and remote desert land.

In the early 1800’s, rough and tumble mountain men made their way up that portion of the river, setting traps for beavers in the streams.  In the 1830’s the formable Mohave Indians made the area less desirable for the trappers, and so the not quite as tough mountain men moved on.

The Spaniards also made their way into the area, mining up and down the river in the nearby mountains.  Then, more prospectors came.  Along the riverbanks, mining camps sprung up.  Just goes to show that water and resources that can be traded for money can be a great way to get a wonderful vacation getaway town going.

We hope you enjoyed this history and your vacation home rental in Lake Havasu.
